The St. Pius Parish Men’s Club sponsors a varied program of competitive team sports for elementary school-aged boys and girls. While most of the participants are St. Pius School students, eligibility is open to all parish-member children and other parishes that do not provide that program are welcome to participate.
As a parish activity, the Men’s Club specifically, the Athletic Committee, supervises the sports program. They oversee the hiring of coaches and the general policies under which the programs operate, in communication with the Catholic Youth Organization Office in Detroit, The CYO is responsible for scheduling games, assigning game officials, and supervising the playoff structure. Most matters of local policy are left to parishes to determine.
It is the goal of the CYO Sports Program to provide young people opportunities to develop positive interpersonal relationships and attitudes of cooperation through participation in team sports under the leadership of responsible Christian adults. While championships and “perfect seasons” are exciting and memorable experiences, they are not the measurements of the success of strength of the programs. The athletic programs also help young people develop a respect for physical development as well as a positive attitude toward fitness.
