Welcome to Second Grade at St. Pius Catholic School!
Thank you for your interest in our school! We are so happy you are considering St. Pius for your child’s education and hope we get an opportunity to meet you and your second grader!
Second grade is a very special year for our students as they celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation in March and make their First Communion in May! We spend a lot of time preparing our students for these important events.
Our curriculum includes instruction in Religion, Math, Reading, Phonics, English and Writing, Science, Social Studies, Spelling, and Handwriting. We also have weekly instruction in Music, Gym, Computers, Spanish, Art, and Library.
We use the F.A.S.T. Reading Program as the basis for our phonics and spelling instruction and Making Meaning to develop comprehension skills. We also use the Daily 5, a classroom structure that allows students to work independently on literacy activities while the teacher works with students individually or in small groups.
Our students learn through a variety of teaching methods such as whole group instruction, small learning groups, partner work, and individualized activities. Technology is integrated in our classroom through the use of iPads and a SmartBoard for interactive learning. We utilize our Science lab twice a week for hands-on exploration and instruction.
The second graders usually take 2-3 field trips each year. We go to Erie Apple Orchards in the fall, a play at a local theatre, and an end of the year trip. We enjoy getting out of the classroom to learn about and experience new things. We think St. Pius is a great place to be and would love the opportunity to talk to you further about our school … and about our second grade in particular!
Thank you, again, for your interest!
