Q: How can I contact my child’s classroom teacher?
A: Teachers can be reached through e-mail or the school office. So as not to disrupt class, we ask that, during the day, you leave a message for the teacher with the school secretary at 734-284-6500.
Q: Is there a lunch program available? What are the typical lunch costs?
A: Yes, hot lunch is offered five days a week. Four days a week lunch is provided by Southgate Public Schools and once a week by St. Pius parents. All lunches are served by parent volunteers.
The typical cost is $2.60 per lunch. Hot lunch order form slips are given out on a monthly basis. Menu items and costs are listed on the monthly lunch calendar. Milk is available every day at an additional cost. Milk is typically ordered at the start of the school year.
“Pirate Wally’s Lunchbox”- Student volunteers from our 7th grade operate our school snack bar during the lunch hour and for clubs and group meetings after school. The snack bar is available Monday-Friday for grades 4-8.
Q: During the winter months, there are sometimes delayed openings and, on occasion, school is cancelled altogether due to adverse weather conditions. How can I find out about such events?

Q: How do I find out about Kindergarten registration?
A: Contact the school office at 734-284-6500. We encourage you to attend our Open House in January and/or March or schedule a private tour of our school.
Q: How can I get involved as a volunteer at the school?
A: The PTO, the school’s Parent-Teacher Organization, provides many exciting opportunities to volunteer and to contribute to specific events throughout the year. If you are interested in helping out in your child’s classroom, please talk to your child’s teacher. We also have other organizations such as our St. Pius Athletic Club, Auction Committee that hosts an auction each year to raise money to supplement the operation of our school, assist in the school library and lunch duty for supervision at lunch time and recess. We welcome all volunteers and want you to know how grateful we are for your time and generosity.
Q: My child needs to take medicine while in school. What are the rules concerning medicines?
Due to State of Michigan, Archdiocese of Detroit, and St. Pius X policies, coupled with insurance regulations, we have the following regulations regarding medications:
Parents may administer any medicine to their own child(ren) here at school.
School personnel may NOT administer any medication, prescription, or over the counter medicine, without a signed written direction from the parent and the child’s doctor.
All prescription medication must be in their original containers.
Physician’s forms are available in the office. These forms must contain the drug name, dose, time, and method of administration-duration and must be on file in the office.
Inhalers and epi-pens at school:
In accordance with Public Act 10 of 2000, students may possess and use metered dose asthma inhalers or epinephrine auto-injectors (epi-pen) or epinephrine inhalers provided with written approval. (Forms for this purpose can be obtained in our school office.)
Q: Is sacramental preparation offered for First Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation?
A: Sacrament programs are offered as parish wide programs. Students from our school prepare during religion class time. First Reconciliation and First Eucharist are prepared in grade 2. Older students are prepared by special arrangements. Confirmation students are prepared in grade 8. Parents, sponsors, and students are expected to attend the parish program and participate in programs and activities held prior to the reception of Confirmation.
Q: How often do the students go to Mass?
A: Parents and Parishioners are invited to attend these liturgical celebrations, which are held most Thursdays at 8:30 A.M. Masses are listed on the monthly calendars sent to parents. Homerooms rotate responsibility for planning the liturgies.
Q:What sports are offered at St. Pius Catholic School?
A: Our parish St. Pius Athletic Club sponsors an extensive athletic program for all children of St. Pius X Parish, in grades 5-8. Instructional Programs (I-League) for Kindergarten to third grade are offered as well. Fall sports include soccer, volleyball, cross country, cheerleading and JV football. Winter sports include basketball and cheerleading. Spring sports include baseball and softball. All sports are for girls and boys.
Q: What other extra-curricular activities are available at St. Pius Catholic School?
A: The school offers Boy/Girl Scouts, Students Council, Team CYO Sports, Academic Competitions, Drama Club, Green Team (re-cycling), Lego Club, Sewing Club, Choir, Altar Servers, Safety Patrol and a Running Club.

Q: Is transportation provided?
When numbers warrant, St. Pius Catholic School is pleased to provide safe, reliable bus service for families via one route for a fee. The fee amount is based on the cost of fuel, driver salary, and maintenance to operate our buses. Each bus is maintained to the Michigan Safety Standards required for all school buses.
Q: Are you accredited?
A: Yes, St. Pius Catholic School is accredited through Michigan Non-public School Accrediting Association (MNSAA). Federal accreditation occurs every seven years.
Q: What are your school hours?
A: The official school day begins at 7:55 AM and continues through 3:15 PM.

Q: Do you offer any Latchkey Programs?
A: In order to better serve the needs of our St. Pius School families, we offer a latchkey program. This program is designed to provide a safe, caring atmosphere for children where they can enjoy activities, do homework, relax, and enjoy friends. Current cost is $4.00 an hour per child. Hours are from 6:50 AM to the start of school at 7:50 AM and 3:15 PM to 6:00 PM.
